We here at Propane & Bourbon are firm believers in GPS trackers. You know, the small hand-held devices that allow you to request help from search-and-rescue or communicate with loved ones even when out of cell phone range. We’ve used ours for almost every adventure, road trip, or whatnot, regardless of cell signal availability. It allows us and our extended tribe to keep tabs on how things are going and even just follow along for fun.
When we set out as full-timers, it seemed prudent to take a similarly diligent approach to monitoring credit card fraud. The implications of being on the road and managing an unexpected financial issue are more complex than when you’re stationary. So we enabled all sorts of text transaction alerts to stay on top of those vulnerabilities. This doesn’t prevent problems but, like the inReach GPS tracker, it helps us catch them sooner rather than later to minimize the crisis.
This means that now every time we make a purchase, my phone chimes in on the action. If we had a nickel for every time J pays for something online and moments later my phone sings its little song, well, we’d have a lot of nickels. But since we don’t, we just laugh. It’s almost Pavlovian now.
One day, J was returning from a propane run. He walked in the door and began to give me an update about where he was able to get our tanks filled. I just smiled.
“You already knew that, of course.”
“Yep,” I said.
“I brought back tacos, too.”
“I know,” I smiled.
“We don’t need inReach, we have Capital One,” he laughed. “But babe, how am I ever going to surprise you with hookers and blow?”
“I think we’re in the clear. I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess those folks only take cash,” I replied.
[Pssst—disclaimer: This is not a Capital One endorsement or sponsored content in any way. It’s just one of our little running jokes. We do recommend that if you haven’t set up alerts on whatever card you’re using, you may want to think about it.]
[Pssst—pro tip: We do highly recommend the Garmin inReach. It’s a vital tool in our adventures. You can find them lots of places but if you feel inclined to use our Amazon affiliate link, that would help keep us supplied with propane and bourbon.]
