Given our druthers, we’d prefer to be exploring the outdoors most of the time. But we sure do love a good urban museum exhibit to round out our life experience and perspective.
In our current lives based in Silver City, we have the need to shuttle my eldest kiddo to the El Paso airport several times a year. While our preference might be for outdoor adventures, we’re certainly not going to squander that necessary travel. We’d rather suck every last atom of opportunity out of the exercise. So we’ve been diving hard into exploring El Paso on those trips.
On our latest excursion, we visited the El Paso Museum of History again. We were touched, educated, and enlightened by the Mountain of Gold exhibit that celebrates Asian culture in El Paso in the 1880s–1980s. We weren’t clueless about the role Asian culture played in the west in general but this exhibit filled in huge gaps in our knowledge.
And there’s something about seeing actual items from people’s lives that hammers home the reality of our interconnectedness and the importance of these stories.
It was a temporary exhibit at the museum we thought was worthy of preserving so here’s a brief look at this important narrative about the role of Asian culture in the history of El Paso.
Mountain of Gold

Mountain of Gold is on exhibit from Sep 27, 2025 – Jan 24, 2027.
The museum
The El Paso Museum of History never fails to surprise and educate us with their exhibits. It’s well worth a visit regardless of what rotating exhibits are in place.
